Saw In Bruges last night. Jury's still out on whether I liked it or not. Bit slow to start, but when it picked up I was enjoying it. Kind of reminded me of The Matador in that it was a comcial look at a fairly dark world/side of human nature. Though, admittedly, it always a little darker and a little less of the outright comedy of The Matador, but I was OK with that...until the climax...and then the comedy was way turned down and the darkness violence was cranked...and I'm not sure how I feel about it.

However, what the movie does do phenomenally well is highlight the city of Bruges (it's a fairy tale city, don't you know? Course that will only make sense if you've seen the movie). The city is practically a co-star. For some place I'd never really heard of before seeing trailers for this movie, it's now on my list of "get there one day" places.

It's funny that you mention that it's a fairy tale city, because the Spanish name for Bruges is Brujas, which also means "witches". I've been meaning to see the movie, but haven't yet.

The "fairy tale city" is actually from the movie itself.

In the end...I think I did like it, just it wasn't what I was expecting, even the expectations I'd formed after an hour of watching it. I'd recommend it to some, but not all (for instance, I was initially thinking of recommending it to my folks, who love The Matador, til the end which probably out-violences what they're willing to accept).

I saw it last night too and feel the same way. I said today that I'd only recommend it to people that are true film freaks. I think most people would find it too slow/violent. Which of course makes little sense until you've seen the movie. It is just a strange little film.

Bruges was a star as well as the art that it houses. I just cannot get some of those paintings out of my mind.

Coincidentally enough, I saw it today myself. I was more decidedly negative (http://fmi-agent.livejournal.com/793386.html) about it...

Yeah...I'd caught that. I was prepared for the "nice assassins part" (see above re: Matador) and I enjoyed the shallow annoyingness of Colin Farrell's character. It was just the last 20 minutes or so were NOT what I thought things were building to. I mean, yes, there was some violence throughout, but yeesh! And the one plot point was SO predictable once the one character showed up how he did. I think, in the end, I'm OK that I spent the money to see it, I just probably wouldn't see it again.
