So, I took a rather nasty (could have been much, much nastier) spill down the stairs last night. Wrenched my knee and ankle quite well. After a half hour, ankle was slightly swollen, but no bruising so I figured, ice, elevate and check in the morning. Well, this morning the knee actually hurts worse and though it could be just stiffening up from overnight, I'd rather have it checked out.

So I decide I should hit an urgent care clinic since my primary care physician (pcp) is affiliated with a large medical group that includes those. I got the the website to find the closest and they say it's best to have an appointment. OK...so I call. They ask who my urgent care physician is. Um, wha? The whole point of urgent care is it's like emergency-lite, right? So, unless I'm truly, truly accident prone and always in and out of there, why would I have an urgent care physician?

So I say I don't have one, but rather a pcp at another office. Oops! Shouldn't have said that. They tell me I need to see my pcp first. So I call her office. Unsurprisingly, she's booked for the day. I can see another physician at 12:45. Um....do they have anything sooner or, you know, could I just get referred to the urgent care people cause, you know...urgent. How about a 10:15 with a physician's assistant? You know what...whatever...just somebody with medical training telling me what I need to do to make my leg stop hurting and whether or not I need a brace.

Still...let's review...

urgent: (adjective) calling for immediate attention.

I will offer a piece of advice from personal experience when involved with urgent care clinics - never call for an appointment. When you call they try to push you off onto somebody else because they're generally pretty busy. It's best to just go down there and wait. They view it as "if you came in then you have a problem that needs to be addressed." It sucks, but they're just trying to see the people who really need help.

I hope your knee is better. I wrenched the hell out of mine once and had to walk around like my leg was made of wood for about a month. Stairs were quite evil during that time.

This was my "note to self" for the day re: not calling ahead.

Let me fix that for you.

urgent: (adjective) calling for immediate administratively pre-certified attention.

You apparently didn't get your health plan's dictionary with your enrollment information.

That's crazy. I took a knee related spill yesterday, too. The ice helped mine a lot though.

The latest theory is blame the padre as his trips seem to have started a trend of spills as of late.

He'll need to call me the next time he's out of town. Glad the verdict wasn't too bad.

that's good that you're not accident prone enough to have an primary urgent care physician. Sorry to hear about your leg though. :o(
