I'm amused by this. Probably only because I watched both Two Towers and A&E's Pride and Prejudice over my vacation.

Austen writes LOTR

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a Dark Lord in possession of a desire to rule the world must be in want of a ring.

"My dear Frodo," said Gandalf to him one day, "are you aware that the One Ring has been found at last?"

Frodo replied that he was not.

"But it has," returned Gandalf, "for I've just been to Minas Tirith to read the old records, and they told me all its history."

Frodo made no answer.

"Do you not want to know who possesses it?" Gandalf cried impatiently.

"You want to tell me, and I have no objection to hearing it."

This was invitation enough.

"Well, dear Frodo, you must know, Saruman has always said that the One Ring was lost forever in the River Anduin. But it turns out a young hobbit-like creature of small fortune found it in the river five hundred years ago, and was so much delighted with it that he took possession immediately."

"What was his name?"

"Gollum."

"Uncle Bilbo's Gollum?"

"Oh! Yes, dear Frodo! Do you not see what this means? Why, dear Bilbo's ring is the very one the Dark Lord is seeking! What a fine thing for you!"

"How so? How can it affect me?"

"My dear Frodo, how can you be so tiresome? You must know I think of your destroying it."

"It is more than I engage for, I assure you."

"But consider the world. Indeed you must destroy it, for it will be impossible for us to be free if you do not."

"Well, I hope you get over it, and see many rings of power come into the Shire."

"It will be no use to us if twenty such should come, if you will not destroy them."

"Depend upon it, dear Gandalf, when there are twenty, I will destroy them all."

hello, i'd say that this post is unrelated to what you were writing about... but i was just wondering if you could write back and tell me how marine biology worked out for you as a major... i am interested in doing that as my major but i don't know if want to do something so heavily science oriented... how do i know if marine biology is something i actually want to study for the rest of my life?

thanks and i appreciate any response you can give me.

happy new year

This is probably going to be longer than you want, but I kind of have to go from where I came from with Marine Bio and where I hope to go to really answer your question.

FIrst off, I've always loved science. Always. The thought of having trepidations about "something so heavily science oriented" is completely foriegn to me. I knew I was going to study some sort of science. It wasn't until a high school trip to the Virgin Islands that I decided on Marine Biology.

A lot of people go into marine biology because they want to work at an aquarium. I really wanted to understand the science of the ocean. If your more interested in the aquarium aspect, I would recommend taking a psch/bio course instead.

So, I went to Southampton College for a marine bio degree. My sophomore year I did a co-op at Mystic Aquarium. I knew it wasn't what I wanted to do with my life, but it gave me a chance to get close to the animals, something I figured would never happen in my research.

I became interedted in work done on beluga whales and contaminants in the St. Lawrence. The summer before my senior year I went up there for an internship. I was basiclaly put in charge of a research project, analyzing beluga blubber for contaminants. It was basiclaly three months in a lab where I discovered that although I love knowing science, the nitpicky details of doing science drives me up the wall.

I have hence decided to pursue a Master's in Science Journalism. I get to know the science, all science, not just one area, and I get to write about, something else I love.

I thoroughly enjoyed getting my degree, and I will be using it with my Master's just not as specifica

Wow, I've never made a comment so long I got cut off before. What I was saying was:

I thoroughly enjoyed getting my degree, and I will be using it with my Master's just not as specifically as I thought when I started out.

As to your problem, I can say this, if you think you really are interested in it, I would pursue it. However, I would also take as many outside of school opportunities as possible, internships, co-ops etc. Even if they fail to show you what you are interested, they well quickly prove to you what you are not interested in.

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a Dark Lord in possession of a desire to rule the world must be in want of a ring.

Wonderful! This made me think of great first lines of literature. Hence it got me to thinking...and now you have Tolstoy writes LOTR:

"All Good Lords resemble one another, but each Dark Lord is Dark and evil in his own way. Everything was upset in the Dark Lord's house. The Dark Lord discovered an intrigue between the creature Gollum and the Hobbit known as Bilbo, and declared that he would have the one ring under the same roof with him. This state of things had now lasted many years, and not only the Dark Lord, Bilbo, and Gollum, but the rest of Middle Earth suffered from it."

Hee hee hee.

heh.
