So I've been invited to a "gift exchange" and have no idea what to buy (if I even go, but that's a much longer story). If it was all people I knew I would be better off, but my friend's SO is inviting people from her work. If it was all women I could get something like bath stuff or candles or something. I'd like to avoid gift certificates, but I may be trapped. Any ideas what I could get for such a gift exchange for under $20?

For our grab-bag holiday party thing, I got a Simpsons desk calendar. It's not perfect, but we're playing that "unwrap or steal someone else's gift" game, so I'm hoping someone who would appreciate it ends up with it. It was the best I could come up with that was neutral but not overly generic.

The best gifts I've ever gotten in these things are a mini Etch-A-Sketch and the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack.

Hmmmm, toys...giving me an excuse to go into a toy store. That's definitely a thought. I don't know if everybody is the eternal, internal five-year-old that I am though.

Anyone who's not eternally five years old at a Christmas party deserves to get a gift he doesn't like.

In my opinion.

Cheese? Coffee? I'm thinking one of those gift sets from Target, like 2 mugs and exotic cocoa, or tea, or I dunno. Those run 10-20 bucks. Gender neutral. Stay away from Hickory Farms, just because whoever gets it will probably be vegetarian or vegan. Murphy's law dictates that.

One of the best gifts I ever received in a gift exchange was a live fish. Go to PetCo or Pet Smart and get a live beta in a jar. The fish live in tiny spaces, with little food, etc. Its great!

you can always go the easy route and do the gift certificate thing... i'm always a fan anyway.

crummy toys would also always get a vote from me...

Buy a CD you love. Nothing says "sharing is caring" like forcing your musical taste on others.

I was considering that because I think everybody should listen to Cowboy Mouth (http://www.cowboymouth.com), but I also know they're an acquired taste so... we'll see.
