Old Town musings
Jul. 19th, 2001 11:39 pmWent out with some friends tonight...ended up at Elliot's. Conveniently "forgot" what Old Town is like on Thursday nights. That or had just blocked it out of my memories. I remember in high school when going to the Thursday night concerts was THE thing to do. Now I just hate the crowds and lack of parking and can't remember why I would go through such a hassle to hear what was normally a fairly crappy band. Walking around tonight made me feel ooooolllllddd! Of course, the fact that my friends and I usually end our nights by midnight substantiates that feeling. What happened to crawling in at dawn?!
Another part of Old Town is visiting my brother, good ol' Schwa, at work. I visit for several reasons. The biggest is that I never see him unless I drop by Paris so I do so whenever I am downtown and know he is working, even if it is for only a few minutes. I also like to visit because it's fun to see the looks I and my friends often receive from some of the clientele. Most people are just like anywhere else, but every once in awhile I catch a look of "You are so not angst-ridden enough to be in here." Ah well, how little they know how often we were in the Paris of old. True, not as often as some, but still. I get the sneaking suspicion I may get some flack for this entry, but hey, I call 'em as I see 'em.

The Flak

It seems to me that Paris today has a lot less angst than the Paris of yore. There's a lot of the teen-angst variety (especially Thursday nights I suppose), about 80%-90% of it is coming from the under 18 set. The rest comes from angsty stuff from the "adults" here... but it is a small portion. Don't get me wrong, I'll get angst in my pants here from time, as will anyone, but it is just not as thick as it once was. Perhaps because the goth population has dwindled and the raver-kid population has exploded. Black eyeliner, Joy Division tunes, and heroin habits will always be more representative of the troubled souls in turmoil than glowsticks, videogame music, and Ecstasy habits. But seriously, I don't think new Paris is as snotty as old Paris, as half the customers seem (to me) to be Joe and Jane average.
But that's just my opinion.
