I'm getting a little worried. I went to a concert on Saturday and one of my ears (the one that was closest to a speaker) is still ringing. Should I be concerned yet?
I had major hearing loss/damage after a Violent Femmes concert at the Ogden. My ears were ringing for 3 days...but eventually it went away. You will probably be ok, but I think you hit that point in adulthood when you want to watch overdoing that kind of thing.
One of my uncles is just about stone deaf from being in a rock band when he was a kid. He has to put these speaker things on his head when we watch tv so he can hear it. It amplifies the sound to a greater degree. If he turned up the volume so that he could hear it, it would have blown the rest of us out of the house.
Yeha, this concert pretty much made me decide to bring earplugs next time. There were a couple songs that physically hurt, and that's just bad. Hearing is good.
a few years ago, i went to the Starlight to see Frank Black. i stood right in front of the stage which was also situated next to one of the speakers. my ears rang between 7 and 10 days or so. and now, i don't care if it's my all-time favourite band/artist, i am wearing the earplugs regardless! if i'm meeting someone at, for instance, Surfside, and if i realise there is a band playing, i will walk back to my car and get my plugs (i've always got a few plugs in my glove compartment - just in case). the friend can wait. my hearing can't. especially because my brain is audial dominant. most people are visual dominant.
going to a loud concert for an audial dominant person is like going to a "gathering to stare at the sun" for a visual dominant person.
also, the argument that people give for not wearing plugs being that it takes away from the music is bullshit. plugs only lower the volume, they don't take away any sounds that you could've heard without them. the only audial drawback to plugs is that your breathing and your voice are amplified. that's it.
but to get back to your concern - you DID suffer at least some hearing loss. doctors say that whenever our ears 'ring' it is a sign of hearing loss due to loud sounds. the little tiny hairs inside your inner ear have deteriorated! but i wouldn't worry about it unless a) you can't hear an emergency vehicle at 1/4mile away or b) the ringing in your ear continues after 3 weeks.
