Apr. 27th, 2008 11:59 pmHad a good weekend. Stenciled a bunch of shirts on Saturday...two of which were commissioned by roommie's boyfriend. In payment? An extra TV roommie has so that when she moves out, I'm not TV-less. Pretty sweet deal if I do say so myself.
Caught a couple movies at the Independent Film Fest...two movies that porbably couldn't be more different (other than they were both documentaries).
The first was We are Wizards all about Harry Potter fandom. I was a little worried at the start cause the first 20 minutes or so focused on the Wizard Rock aspect--fan bands with songs song from characters POVs etc. Meh. But then it started to get into other aspects including the webmistress for The Leaky Cauldron and the teen activist who started "Potter War," a boycott of all non-book Harry Potter-ness to challenge Warner Bros to let fans keep their Potter-inspired sites. The best, though, was Brad Neely, creator of the George Washinton cartoon that circulated awhile back. Apparently he got started off creating an alternative audio track to the first Potter movie. His sense of humor is just what you would think it was based on that cartoon. Fun film.
In the complete opposite direction...not fun, depressing...was Secrecy, an in-depth look at the tension between secrecy, security, and democracy. This was REALLY good. The filmmakers did an incredible job of illustrating the nuances of the issue and, for having a topic matter that inherently doesn't have much to film, still managed to create a visually interesting and completely engrossing film. I highly recommend it if you get the chance to see it (apparently they're doing the film fest tour now and are in negotiations re: a DVD release).
So now I'm off to MD for an all-staff retreat at the start of the week...should be fun, though I do wish the weekend had been longer.
