Read what it says about Basic Accounts. Hell, if you won't click, let me cut and paste for you (emphasis mine):

Basic Accounts

Basic Account is an option available to accounts which were created before March 12, 2008. No account created after this date can be turned into a Basic Account. Basic Accounts will not have any advertising displayed on their accounts, but will have fewer benefits and features. A Basic Account includes the following:

* Upload up to 6 userpics

* 25 subscriptions for notification of new posts, friends, comments, or events

Is it just me or does that totally undermine the basic model on which LJ was created. Oh wait, it's not just me. Even the founder of LJ is pissed. Just...Gah!

I've been worried about all the idiocy LJ has displayed off and on and was actually really thinking about it last week as I know my paid account is coming due for a re-subscription. Much as I love all my user icons...screw that. I am not giving LJ any more money. What's more? I'm going to start being more diligent about dual posting over on Insane Journal. I know some of you already have accounts over there...I recommend everybody at least join up and reserve your username at the minimum. Things around here have been spiraling downwards and I'm not sure when they'll hit bottom, but I'm starting to really believe that they will.

And, as ever, LJ posts about their screw-ups, but never quite seems to fix them. Gah!

I've always had the account formarly known as a free account and while I've always envied yoiu're fun icons.. haven 't really minded only having minimal stuff. (although I don't post nearly as much as you do). A few of my friends have blogs through google and seem to like that ok - not sure of the details though - but it might be another place to look into.
