I don't know how many of you have been following the whole AOL/Yahoo plan to start charging for priority delivery of emails thing. It's been causing a bit of a fuss at my office. I gotta say though, I loved this quote:

Mr. Graham said AOL had no incentive to degrade the regular e-mail service it provided to users. In any case, he said, the company stands to earn only about "as much of a revenue stream as setting up a lemonade stand on the corner" from the Goodmail fees.

Yeah...a lemonade stand with a guranteed business of millions of customers per day. Asshat.

I meant to write about this on my journal earlier. My opinion is that AOL is welcome to try. Many places will not condescend to pay to have their e-mail delivered (or will simply be unable to pay). Once their customers bitch that they're not getting their e-mail, AOL will cave and let mail be free again, because the alternative is telling their customers to find a new provider.

IF it happens, I bet so many people will sign up for it that Priority will end up being SLOWER then UnPaid. Just like how unpaid LJ accounts are faster then Paid accounts.

I was thinking that maybe if AOL and Yahoo do this, everyone will leave those services. Which would be fine. Then again, I don't understand why anyone is at AOL anyway, so I obviously don't have a clear handle on the market forces.

If "sheer, stubborn, and deliberate ignorance of the alternatives" can be viewed as a market force.

PS: Yahoo should know better.
