While I know that racial profiling happens constantly and it's horrible, my first reaction to this is "Um....the store was closed. That's not racial profiling, it's getting treated like the rest of us, you know, non-celebrities."

I like what this guy says about it. There's a healthy dose of mockage, a reality check with "...she has accumulated some credibility over the years. If she has a racial complaint to air, I’m inclined to take it seriously rather than assume she’s crying wolf," and then mention that if it really was a racial issue, shouldn't she discuss it now instead of waiting til September when she can turn it into a ratings boost for her show?

As someone who is chronically late, I'm often turned away just after a store closes. (Psychologically, I feel I've wasted time if I get somewhere early, not as close to the deadline as I can.) Sometimes I'm let in a few minutes late, but usually not. It's usually policy that people still in the store can stay there.

I don't know if Oprah was discriminated against though.

I agree; I saw that and I thought, hello? Closed, lady. Tired shop assistants wanting to get home, cash registers emptied, come back tomorrow like anyone else would have to do.

Sheesh.

I had this argument with my mom.

She said: "Well, Hermes makes it their business to keep stores open for A-List celebrities adn she's considered an A-List celebrity since she spends so much money there."

Me said: "Tough fucking shit. Oprah is an ass if she makes a habit of showing up at Hermes just as its closing. I'd slam the goddamn door in her face, too. Working retail, they don't get paid what she gets paid. She's the rude one, not the retail drones."

Needless to say, no amount of arguing back and forth about it caused either one of us to compromise.

I mean, sheesh, we've both worked retail in our lives. You'd think she'd have more sympathy for working stiffs, but not so. *shakes head*

My partner's in retail and I hear all sorts of stories about people showing up late. Perhaps there was a racist angle to the story, but I'm wondering if perhaps her ego is fuelling this. If there is, she should be airing it now.

Winfrey's friend, Gayle King, who was there, told Entertainment Tonight, "Oprah describes it as 'one of the most humiliating moments of her life.'"

what? I wish that was one of the most humiliating moments in my life.
