I think The Incredibles is to blame... I went to see Robots tonight and...eh.

Recently, animated movies have done a damn fine job of balancing the kid to adult humor. This one was just ever so slightly more for the kids (Although it gets credit for being the family film to slip the term "brazilian wax" in). Probably wouldn't have been an issue a few years ago, but with Finding Nemo and The Incredibles showing just how good (and possible) a perfectly balanced movie is, when the balance is off, it's glaringly obvious.

Then there was the story. It was just too pat. You knew how Nemo and the Incredibles were going to end--I mean they're family fics, how could you not--but the journey was full of lots of suprising twists and turns. With Robots, you could basically map out the rest of the movie after the bad guy reveal. It was all laid out in front of you, step-by-step.

Then, there was the random pop-culture references. They can be done so well sometimes and than other times it's a matter of "This will be funny, it doesn't really fit anywhere, but it's funny so we'll use it." In most cases, the latter was the case.

Honestly, despite the mostly disparaging review, I did like the movie. It was worth the cash...it just wasn't what I'd hoped. Like I said, I've been spoiled by The Incredibles.

I was good and applied for another job today... now what?

I'm going a bit stir crazy and words cannot describe how sick of the snow I am.

Visiting Roommate was watching Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves earlier. In my room, all I could hear was the music and any lines that were actually shouted. The sad truth is that I could tell where she was in the movie based on the soundtrack alone. As [livejournal.com profile] schwa242 can confirm, I watched that movie incessentally when it first came out on video. My appreciation of the movie has changed though. Used to be focused on massive adoration of Christian Slater and minor appreciation of Alan Rickman. Now it's all about Rickman and Morgan Freeman. Alan Rickman just gives good bad guy.

Was trying to think of Christian Slater movies of yore and had to snicker when I remembered Kuffs. He's had some wonderful flicks (Heathers anyone) but the majority of his roles are so bad they're good.

So now I'm snowbound. I had hoped to have the apartment to myself as Boy Roommate is at work and Girl Roommate is in VT. Visiting Roommate went to visit her Aunt and Uncle last night...I thought for the weekend, but it turned out to just be for the evening.

I'm guessing this weekend will turn into another combination of book reading, web surfing and DVD watching, just as the past few have been. I need to get a life, but first I need to get a job so that I can afford one.
