MMMMM... there's just something about Saturday mornings. I was going to be industrious, get up early do laundry etc. etc. but with threats of a big storm I decided I was much better served laying in bed and reading the latest Terry Pratchett. The sun is supposedly making an appearance tomorrow, I'll do the laundry then.

Went to the MFA last night. Tried to convince Classroommate and her best friend to come to the mfafirstfriday event. Basically one gallery is opened up, there's a jazz band and food and drinks. After much back-and-forthing they bailed on me, but I still went. I hit the museum right after work. I can't believe that after more than a year of living here, I hadn't been there before last night. Of course, part of that is the first museum I went to in Boston was The Gardner and I fell in love so every time I feel museum-y that's where I go.

Anyway, the MFA... my favorite part (so far... I only got to explore a little) was the Egyptian section. They have these two little rooms where they've basically rebuilt small altar rooms, encasing the carved sandstone blocks into the walls so you are surrounded by as much of the actual temples as they could recover. One of those experiences that just lights up my nervous system somehow.

There was a special art deco exhibit so I checked that out. Some fabulous stuff. I love art, but somehow it's the day-to-day stuff that gets me in most museums. The clothes, the furniture etc. The art deco was no exception.

As for the mfafirstfriday... eh. In the beginning I was definitely the youngest person there, but a younger crowd showed as the event progressed. The jazz was tolerable, but the acoustics of the gallery were painful, especially with the brass instruments. The gallery used contained the most foreboding art work... I'm thinking they should try it in one of the 20th century galleries...Kind of hard to enjoy wine and food and jazz while martyrs are dying on the walls around you. I wouldn't say no to going again, but it would definitely be better with, I don't know... people I know.
