So my boss purchased these static mats (hell if I know the technical term). They're supposed to sit under your keyboard and draw any static charge off of you so that you won't accidently fry your computer by zapping it. It seems to work fine for everybody except me. The best we can figure is that somehow it's drawing the charge off of me, but that's causing an imbalance between me and the environment so that static energy from around me flows in. Whatever the hell it is, after 10 seconds of touching that thing I'm all pins and needles and itches and just URGH!

Is our theory even sound?

i wouldn't know anything about your theory.

but i was going to mention that i have heard that there is a small percentage of people who, for some reason, have an abnormal effect on static electricity. for instance, no matter what sprays or dryer sheets they use, they still can't get rid of static-cling in their clothes...or saran-wrap (tm) won't work for them because they somehow suck all the static out of the plastic and into their bodies. do you also have this problem? i think it has to do with their cellular structure being magnetized of sorts. i truly don't understand it...i've only heard that there are a few people like that. Tom Martino (the Troubleshooter) says he's like that. he also claims to stop watches, just by wearing them. or street lights will flicker as he walks underneath. things like that.

I'm not usually a person like that. I've had a reaction on occassion, but it's not a standard part of my life or anything. The weird thing is today I completely fried our phone system just by answering my phone. It was very odd. I told my boss that in my case, I think the static mat causes more problems than it solves.

Static Pants

In the late 80's I worked as a system engineer for a large automobile firm. I maintained the CAD/CAM system. The system used pens and tablets. The system was very subsceptible to static electricity, and pens were changed on a fairly regular basis. One day, a new designer started, and immediately needed a new pen. I replaced it, and a few hours later, she needed another. For the next week, I replaced pens about twice a day, sprayed with anti-static, and tried everything I could think of to no avail. Then I noticed that she was wearing a wool skirt. I had to politely ask if she was wearing silk underwear. She was!! Every time she squirmed or moved in her chair, she was generating static electricity. Enough to damage equipment!!
