I've been thinking, in this age of instant communication, emails, cell phones, text messaging etc. there's still something about writing a letter. There's a line from a TV series that always sticks in my head "She belongs in the age when letter-writing was still an art form."

OK, so my letters aren't exactly art, but I still like writing them. Thankfully, I have at least one friend (yeah eeyorekdm) who agrees with me and corresponds with me with letters. So even though we keep in touch through phone and email and LJ, there's still some things we save for letters. There's just something about opening the mailbox and holding the letter in your hand. The handwriting (crappy on my part), the scribbles, the stationary...I don't know, it just makes things more real for me. I think it's along the same lines of how I feel about film vs digital in photography.

I have boxes and boxes of letters from when I was in Finland. I miss writing letters.

That's another thing I like about them...the permanence.

the handwriting aspect is so personal...it's like a fingerprint. it's like hearing a person's voice vs reading a manuscript. the tones and inflections can almost always be translated with the pen, whereas prefabricated fonts depict the words portrayed yet lacks translating the character behind it.

of course you know me - i tend to keep a lot of e-mails (the real meaniful ones). I will say one thing about e-mails vs letters .... if you have the "save draft" feature on your e-mail, you can tell what you've already told the person (ie. where to start your next e-mail).
