taerowynNow that it's over (it being either the season or the series....remains to be seen) I thought I'd pull together a few thoughts on Dollhouse.
I admit,the concept squicked me out...and the first few shows (that were apparently showing Fox's heavy hand) did nothing to alleviate that. But I was still willing to go ahead and watch, in no little way aided by the fact that I didn't have to tie myself to the Friday night airtime and could just watch on Hulu on Saturday mornings.
For those who didn't watch/don't know. The dollhouse is a mysterious organization under the streets of LA. It's comprised of "volunteers" who agree to have their minds wiped and then reloaded with different personalities based on what a client wants: hostage negotiator, bodyguard, perfect girlfriend, etc. That last, of course, being where the squick comes in as it brings up all kinds of issues about consent...issues that never really get resolved.
On a storyline front, the show did start to pick up mid-season, when the focus became less about the individual engagements and more about the over-arching mythology of the show.
While I was able to get over the squick for the most part and just enjoy the show (one key casting decision really helping with that), by the time the end of the finale came around, I realized that...I was really OK if that was it. I mean, yes, I'd thoroughly enjoyed the last few episodes (to the point that I was watching it on air on Friday night, often at the edge of my seat yelling things like "I knew it!" and "No!"). And true, there's not all that much resolution--in fact, in a lot of ways you've just come back around to the beginning. And yet, if that ends up being the end...I'm not going to be all that upset.
This is a pretty good analysis of how I feel (if a bit more negative about the show overall).
