Dec. 9th, 2006 01:57 pmI am just blown away by the amazing-ness of the Firefly phenomenon right now. I'm not a convention attender...I went to World Con once because both Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman were there, but decided they weren't my thing. Too crowded, too manic, just too much. But I know other fans live for these things.
So this weekend was supposed to be a huge Firefly convention. Things started looking shaky in late November with an announcement that the convention "might" be canceled...10 days before the event. Then it was announced that it was a go. The night before the convention? Canceled.
I think in most fandoms, that would be the rest of the story, or, possibly the fans, like Firefly fans, would have pulled together some fan-run activities for those who a) couldn't cancel, b) were already there/in transit when the cancellation was announced, and/or c) refused to give up their vacation just cause the con was canceled.
But in the world of Firefly? The actors, some scheduled to show at the now defunct con, some not show up anyway just to hang out with the fans. They're not getting paid, they just know what the weekend meant to their fans and are willing to go out of their way to make the weekend amazing even if the planned events fell through. That, ladies and gentlemen, is class. I'm blown away.
So, another plug for the Firefly/Serenity 'verse. It's not just great entertainment, but the people behind it are just phenomenal human beings as well. Go, watch, enjoy...join the fandom, you'll be in amazing company.
