Oct. 16th, 2004 09:56 pmBe warned, this is one of patented "I haven't been on LJ forever" posts (drunken typing doesn't count). And can I tell you that 18 pages of a friends list takes awhile to get through. Even if you do skip most of the RSS feeds.
Things I missed... (and warning
eeyorekdm this does contain spoilers for your letter.)
Writing about Christopher Reeve. I was so upset when I read this first thing Monday morning.
schwa242 writes splendidly about him as an actor, but I'm going to be selfish and write about me.
I think the Superman movies probably impacted my childhood just as much as Star Wars. Reeve was my first crush. He was anything a girl wanted. Tall, dark, handsome. Smart as Clark. Strong as Superman. Little bit of mystery, but inherently good. As my mom put it, I've lost my Cary Grant.
I know I'm not alone in having honestly believed that he would walk one day. How could he not, he was Superman. OK, getting ridiculously choked up about this so must move on.

My parents were out visiting a week ago. For a whole week.
Actually it went really well. I got to be a tourist again, which is always fun. Plus, got some really nummy food. And I got to see the Blue Man Group. My parents were really trepidatious about the idea, but I got a big ol' "I told you so" in because they loved it. As did I.
The week was just about perfect timing though. Any longer and things were going to get a little tense. A week of them visiting is hugely different than a week of me at home, namely in the time of actual interaction.

I started my job hunt one day too late. I began looking at postings today and there was one that closed yesterday for a writer/editor/photographer for one of the east coast Sea Grants. Grrrrrr.

One of my classes this semester is setting up a single issue webzine. It's one of those situations where the professor's developed the class thinking "this sounds like a good idea" without realizing "this is going to involve a shitload of work and we still might not pull it off in the end." OK, so that's being overly pessimistic, but they really are a bit naive about what this entails. To give you an idea of their technological savvy, they were impressed with the WordArt title in one of our first page mock-ups. Ohhhhh... look at how the title is all wavy like that.
Anyway, for those who haven't seen, I've enlisted my brother's artistic capabilities as possible illustrations in the essays/op-eds/reviews section. The people I've talked to have all been positive about the work, we just haven't met in class to discuss it (and
schwa242, I just realized we don't have class this week, so you may not find out til next Tuesday).
And as I've previously told friends, trust me, once this thing goes online I'll be telling everybody I can about so you guys will be among the first to hear.

Another class is even more time-consuming. Our only assignment is a 3000-3500 word profile. I won't say who mine is, because I am going to try to market it, but it's been great. Originally he was my second choice, but so much of what he does links to things I've been contemplating that I'm absolutely loving just sitting down and talking to him. The conversations are just so interesting. Course the 3000-3500 word thing is intimidating, but I'll do my best.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saw Team America today. Oh. My. God. Too funny. Just absolutely ridiculous in so many delightful ways. I won't share cause then I'll get all spoilery, but you should all go check it out. Just don't bring anybody too young with you. The twelve-year-olds sitting behind us got quite the education.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm going to NYC Monday and Tuesday. One of our profs has set up several meetings with the editors of some big time magazines. I'm really looking forward to the trip even though I have absolutely no schmooze capabilities. It'll still be great to visit the magazines plus, free hotel room in NYC. Can't be bad.
We still haven't made any decisions on what we're going to do Monday night. Any of you New Yorkers have any suggestions (or interest in meeting for a drink or some such)?
