Jun. 26th, 2004 01:28 amI'm not a cheapskate, I swear. I usually overtip, I don't obsess over coupons, when food is old I feel fine throwing it out. But tonight I came off looking like one and it kind of pisses me off.
Went out with my roommates and their friends. Normally I wouldn't, but it was for the roommate-I-like's birthday. So me, poor grad student, and six career women. Because of the whole "poor" thing I had an entree and water. I watched as they all had multiple drinks and multiple appetizers and desserts and what-have-you. So the bill comes. Counting my entree and chipping in for the birthday girl, my pre-tip bill is probably $15. They take the bill and divide it by 6 (so birthday girl doesn't pay) and announce that everybody owes $37 including tip.
Fuck that! I'm sorry, I know this sounds like a Friends episode or something equally as stupid, but I was pissed. I stood my ground (without actually saying anything) and only put in a twenty. Several of them had decided to put in more since they'd had more expensive entrees and such so we were fine on the bill, I just came off looking like a jackass and feeling quite uncomfortable. One of the many reasons I don't normally go out with this group of people. But now I've vented that frustration and feel better.

Date: 2004-06-27 03:25 pm (UTC)I went out with friends once and even though I ordered almost nothing (overpriced greens and a water), I wound up paying half the check - basically subsidizing another person's overpriced meal. From now on, it's Pay For What You Ordered And Split the Guest Of Honor's Meal Equitably. :P
