Seattle was loads of fun, although it did drive home the point that we get along freakishly well. No nine strangers should get along this well. We spend ALL our time together at school, out drinking, etc. You send us on a trip, nine people in two rooms and, if anything, we come back closer. It's a little freakish, the shit has to hit the fan at some point, doesn't it?

Anyway, the conference was all sorts of cool. For those who don't know/remember, it was the annual AAAS conference. Basically science, science and a little more science. If you've seen stories about math to predict divorces, the loss of languages in the world, new voting technology, the genetics of dogs, and all sorts of other new science stories since last Friday then they were probably linked to the conference (other than the S. Korea cloning schtuff). There was just so much information. As one of our professors warned us, it was like trying to drink from a fire hydrant.

I got to see all sorts of presentations.

- A press conference on the math and marriage, divorce predictors, which was fairly cool
- A mediocre talk on the long term goals and short term actions of science
- A phenomenal talk on privacy and research databases that I'm going to try to flesh out into a story
- A mind-numbing talk on intercontinental transport of air pollution
- A fairly interesting talk on the attempts to get Intelligent Design into school curriculum
- A bad talk on the issue of security and research data bases. I was hoping it would be similar to the privacy one, but no such luck
- The tail end of a discussion on placebos - fairly interesting
- A talk on AIDS including a mind-bogglingly good speech by Stephen Lewis, UN Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa

Plus, had dinner at The Pink Door (the picture doesn't do it justice) a great little cabaret restaurant, went to the Experience Music Project for an awards dinner that meant we got to wander around all the exhibits after hours, went to the public marketplace (I mean it's Seattle, don't you kind of have to?) and wandered around, and met up with Kristin, who I haven't seen in years, and she, Stu and I went clubbing. All in all, a very good trip. The only problem is now I'm back in the land of freezing cold temperatures and homework. Ewwwwwwww.
